About the Event

The Emancipation Day Picnic is hosted by the Oakville Museum in partnership with the CCAH. This event originated in 1850 when African Canadians from across Ontario would gather in Oakville’s George’s Square to honour their journey to freedom.

The 2022 picnic features Caribbean meals prepared by Chef Romaine Newell, performances by singer John Campbell and the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) Steelpan Band, and museum tours including The Underground Railroad: Next Stop Freedom exhibit.
